On May 6, 2025, India launched a series of missile strikes targeting what it described as terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. The operation, dubbed “Operation Sindoor,” was a direct response to the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir, which resulted in the deaths of 26 people, predominantly Hindu tourists. India attributed the attack to The Resistance Front, a group it claims is linked to Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, though Pakistan denies any involvement.
The missile strikes reportedly hit nine locations, including areas in Kotli, Muzaffarabad, Bahawalpur, Bagh, and Muridke. While India maintained that the strikes were “focused, measured and non-escalatory,” targeting only militant sites and avoiding Pakistani military facilities, Pakistani officials reported that at least three people, including a child, were killed, and over a dozen were injured. Pakistan’s military confirmed the attacks and stated that its air force was on high alert, claiming to have shot down two Indian jets, although no further details were provided.
The Kashmir region has long been a flashpoint between India and Pakistan, both of which claim the territory in full but control parts of it. Since the partition of British India in 1947, the two nations have fought multiple wars and engaged in numerous skirmishes over Kashmir. The region has witnessed repeated cycles of violence, with militant attacks often leading to military responses, further escalating tensions.
The current escalation has raised international concerns, given that both India and Pakistan are nuclear-armed states. Analysts warn that any miscalculation could lead to a broader conflict with catastrophic consequences. The United States and other global powers have called for restraint and dialogue to prevent further deterioration of the situation.
As the situation remains tense, diplomatic channels are under strain, with both countries expelling diplomats and suspending key agreements. The international community continues to monitor developments closely, urging both nations to exercise caution and seek peaceful resolutions to their longstanding disputes.
