Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, passed away on April 21, 2025, at the age of 88, concluding a transformative 12-year papacy that reshaped the Catholic Church’s engagement with the modern world. As the first pope from the Americas and the first Jesuit to ascend to the papacy, his tenure was marked by a commitment to inclusivity, social justice, and environmental stewardship. 

In the final months of his life, Pope Francis faced significant health challenges, including a hospitalization for double pneumonia in February 2025.
